Is it winter yet,

July 17, 2019 Posted by Jodi Dew Claw News, Random Rambles

Cause we are so ready for the cooler temps, snow, and funnest season of the year.

Already Dreaming of winter…

Summers are great, love them. River trips, berry picking, endless sunshine, wild Alaska, it’s all wonderful. But let’s face it, for dog mushers nothing beats a long cold snowy winter. Which is why we take time in summer to make sure we are ready for winter.

What kind of work is being done you ask?

Well the kennel expansion project includes new pens, a large free run area, and new dog houses. The puppies are looking like adults, and now is a great time to work with them on socialization and recall. Both of which are done on regular free runs in the morning when it is cool.

We have started improving our permanent camp location, making sure we have plenty of firewood for bonfires, cooking, and the wood stoves we use in our locally made Arctic Oven Tents for winter camping trips by dog team.

Cleaning trails, and cutting brush at Dew Claw Cabin are happening, to make sure we have clear safe trails. In addition to the main trails we maintain a small trail loop from the Dew Claw Cabin for our guests to explore. We also have a nice cleared area for the dogs to camp at either our Arctic Oven Tent camp or our rustic cabin. This gives our guests options for overnight dog mushing trips.

Lastly gear has to be organized. Tents are cleaned and packed up. Camping gear is inventoried, cleaned & repaired as needed, and new gear is being purchased. One great find (thank you craigslist) was a larger industrial meat saw, you can see the blades hanging in the gear area, and they give you an idea of how big the actual saw is.
