Checkpoints are open and ready for business~

October 6, 2013 Posted by Jodi the Mushers, the Races, the Sponsors

Buckwheat says “alright y’all let’s get this party started, time to run!”

Although preparations for the 2014 Iditarod began some time ago; fall signals the start of a new mushing race season. Race registrations are starting to open, and you can see which mushers will be running what races leading up the the big events. Here is a listing of Alaska Distance races from Sled Dog Central, click the race name to visit the race’s website.

Each fall we need to put up fire wood, straw, and fish to get us through the winter. I am happy to report that is all done and we are set. And now it is time for me to tackle another huge responsibility; the fundraising necessary for us to compete in world class distance races. Support comes in all shapes and sizes, from generous donations and frequent flier miles  to delightful homemade chocolate bonbons and organic trail treats. Dan & I are super grateful for all the wonderful encouragement and support we have received over the years from Team Dew Claw.

Last year as part of our sponsorship program we started a checkpoint sponsor program; giving people the opportunity to get the Dew Claw Team to Nome one checkpoint at a time. Thanks so much to all our amazing Checkpoint Sponsors from last year. For many there was a story that went along with the sponsorship, which made it even more special. We shared these stories here on our blog, just click the links on the 2013 Checkpoint Sponsors list to learn more.

OK the original idea for a Checkpoint Sponsor program came about because many of our friends were wanting a ‘sponsor a dog’ program. But truth be told, I just could not do it. Sorry! It kinda seems unfair, how can you pick just one! When they are all amazing! What if no one sponsored someone? it would be too sad. Dan thinks I am being silly, and he may be right (don’t tell him I said that). Anywho, I decided we are not playing favorites in the dogs yard, but I still wanted to do something special. I realize that people enjoy having a personal connection to the kennel, and we wanted to find a way to honor Team Dew Claw members and let them be directly involved in our biggest event of the year Iditarod.

Once you get out away from the crowds and alone with your dogs you can relax and enjoy the trail. But we always know we are not really alone, Team Dew Claw is out there cheering for us, Thank You.

The Checkpoint Sponsor program was a success, we got some very nice feedback, and hope to see it grow this year. Along with all this there was another interesting effect. During the race I found myself thinking of the individual people as I came into various checkpoints they had chosen.  Of the stories behind them. Those thoughts were comforting on what would be a long difficult trip. Funny how things work out. In setting out to find a way to let our friends be more involved what I got was also a way for me to feel even more support, Thank You.

This year it will be Dan’s turn on the trail. And we are excited to announce that the 2014 Checkpoint Sponsor Program is open and ready for business. The reality is that it takes a whole team, and the only way you make it to Nome is one checkpoint at a time.

And we are off to a great start, as we welcome back returning Team Dew Claw members: Nancy Bailey, Dawn Beckwell, Marlys Sauer, and Walt & Janet Tremer. Don’t worry there are still plenty of checkpoint left to choose from.  Checkpoint Sponsorship is actually one of many ways to get involved in Team Dew Claw, we welcome all kind words of encouragement and support and we value ALL our team members.

It will be a different landscape once the snow comes; and we can’t wait!

It is looking to be an exciting season. The team is young; but after last years races, experienced and seasoned. Fall training is going great. Of course we all hope for early snow so that we can run the team with sleds. But till then we continue to run with the quad. Love seeing the dogs get stronger, as runs get longer, and days get shorter.

Of course we will keep you posted here; with kennel goings on , race plans, my random ramblings, and photos of the beautiful dogs.

Happy Trails~
